Welcome

I don't know how/why you have found yourself here, but while you're about, check out my musing on life. Warning, I will not be held accountable if you suddenly find yourself hating the world.

Song a day Challenge (Day 2 - Song of last year)

Thinking back, there were many good songs released last year:
Maybe my choices come from the Uni environment, but here is the shortlist for Song of Last Year:

Love the way you lie - Eminem Ft. Rihanna

POWER - Kanye West

Not Afraid - Eminem

Fuck You - Cee Lo Green

But the winner for me, has to be End Credits - Chase and Status ft. Plan B.

Check back tomorrow for Songs that make me Happy.

Too much coffee Part II

Slight change of plan on this post, was gonna be songs that have had an effect on me over the last 10 years. Found a Facebook group that pretty much summed up what I wanted to do anyway. "30 Day Song Challenge" asks that you post a song a day that fills the requirements for that day:
day 01 - a song from your childhood
day 02 - your favorite song at this time last yearday 03 - a song that makes you happy
day 04 - a song that makes you sad
day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone
day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere
day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event
day 08 - a song that you know all the words to
day 09 - a song that you can dance to
day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep
day 11 - a song from your favorite band
day 12 - a song from a band you hate
day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure
day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love
day 15 - a song that describes you
day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate
day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio
day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio
day 19 - a song from your favorite album
day 20 - a song that you listen to when you’re angry
day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy
day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
day 29 - your least favourite song of all time
day 30 - your favorite song of all time

So I have  decided to take up this challenge, and hopefully put any readers onto some new music or remind them of classic songs that they might have forgotten about.
And this leads us nicely on to DAY 1.
A song from your Childhood.
I dunno how do really do this one as one song, so I'm gonna break it down.
For proper childhood memories, all I have do it is listen to this and I'm in stitches.

For a bit older, you gotta look to OPM:

And the album I think every one of my friends had:

Listening to those songs put me straight back around 7 years, amazing.
Tomorrow: Day 2 - The song of last year.

Too much coffee Part I

Hi again...
So I went onto MySpace today for the first time in a while (probably close to 3 years), and I found a list of things I wanted to achieve by the time I was 21, and seeing as that has come I wanted to look back at what I wanted to have done by this time in my life. I will show you the list and then look at each one in turn.

Watch all the Die Hard films in one day
Have sex while playing frogger [Taken from Scrubs :)]
Drive over a big bridge in a convertable.
Say whats up to Dave Grohl
Punch a bear in the face.
Drink so much I have to have my stomach pumped.
Go to Reading Festival
Applied/ be at University.
Race someone in wheelchairs.
Brew my own beer.
Do the ballon message thing.
Sleep outside with no tent.
Learn to bartend.
  1. Watch all the Die Hard films in one day - DONE : It says quite a lot that this is one of the first things that came to mind when I thought about what I wanted to achieve in the next 4 years. But I have done it, and I don't think I even meant to, it was just a hungover day in Bath...
  2. Have sex while playing Frogger - DONE: Standard, and if you find the game easy normally, try it. It's a bit harder  to concentrate.
  3. Drive over a big bridge in a convertible - FAILED: What was I thinking?! One, I would have to have enough money to buy/the balls to steal a convertible. Obviously this didn't happen, but I suppose it showed that I wanted freedom and some sense of importance.
  4. Say "What's up?!" to Dave Grohl - FAILED: Foo Fighters were one of my favourite bands at the time, and to me, Dave Grohl was the coolest guy on the planet. But whenever the gigs came around close to were I live, I was always broke or busy, so this was another target that kept getting postponed.
  5. Punch a bear in the face - FAILED: WTF?!
  6. Drink so much I have to have my stomach pumped - DONE: Well, they don't pump your stomach anymore, but I woke up in hospital on a drip with alcohol poisoning, shows what I enjoyed doing at 17.
  7. Go to Reading Festival - DONE: Went. had to much fun I went back the next year. But now with Uni and work, stuff like this has had to take a back seat. It's a shame because I look back at the few days you spend at a festival and think that they were easily the most fun you can have in a tent and a field.
  8. Applied/Be at Uni - DONE: Currently studying at Bath Uni, best choice I have made to date. Met some amazing people.
  9. Race someone in wheelchairs - DONE: Nothing malicious intended, just saw it in a lot of films and TV shows, and it looked like fun. It was.
  10. Brew my own beer - DONE: Warning, don't add anything extra. For some reason we thought it might need extra vodka, came out at 15% proof, and hurt to drink.
  11. Do the Balloon message thing - DONE: Put a message tied to a balloon filled with Helium, and let it off, back when I had a small amount of faith in Humanity.
  12. Sleep outside with no tent - DONE: Would like to make this clear, I had this idea before I heard anything about Brokeback Mountain. I thought it would give you a sense of the scale of Nature and being part of this world, but it was just fucking cold.
  13. Learn to bartend - DONE: Mum owning a pub did make this one of the easier statements to achieve on the list. People slate the job, but its one of the best I have ever had.
10/13, I don't think that's too bad.
Hopefully it might have inspired you to create a similar list, maybe for a different age range, but the best advice I can give is not to limit your ideas, go crazy.

Imbroglio

Word of the day, means:  complicated and embarrassing state of things.
I feel this pretty much sums up how I feel at the minute.
This week contained the most depressing day of the year, Valentines day...
I don't understand the need for a day to express your love for someone. Surely if you are in a relationship, you do that most days. And if you're not, then one day out of the year isn't going to save you. The gym was offering a Valentine's day treat, to bring your "loved one" along for the day. I could think of nothing worse than a girl that I liked/loved seeing me in the state I get into at the gym. Fair enough you want to spend some time together, but surely not that much. Couples kissing in the pool, taking up lanes that other people are trying to use. I will admit, the only thing that cheered me up was reliving Jaws in my mind.

Went to the NME music tour in Bristol. I had heard good things about Magnetic Man and Crystal Castles live, and they did not disappoint. The line up was as follows:

  • The Vaccines
  • Everything Everything
  • Magnetic Man
  • Crystal Castles
Things where pretty tame until Magnetic Man came on. Then the lights dropped, the bass kicked in, and the room exploded with noise and movement. I have to say, one of the best live bands I have seen in a while, and considering that the music comes from three guys standing behind laptops, it was a really interment gig. But no matter how good Magnetic Man's performance was, they got outshone by Crystal Castles. Even though less than a month ago she broke her ankle, she was as lively as ever.

I was surprised with the age range that attended the gig. Saw young kids, can't have been  more than 16, dubbing it out along side older guys, probably closer to 40. It was amazing to watch and be part of.
The fact that music can be timeless and span across a large age range is amazing. People will argue that music was better in the 60's or the 70's. But I will always argue against that. The music that is being produced now is amazing. Perhaps not the most talented musicians that people have seen, but if half a billion people watch some 14 year old kid on youtube singing about the first time he fell in love, then fair enough...someone must like him.

Again, I seem to have suffered some sort of typing diarrhea and gone on about nothing to do with the title of the blog again...
Great
Ciao.

Procrastination II (Is this it?)

So here I am again, spilling my strange mind onto the internet for the amusement of others. The theme of this blog is currently unknown, but I have The Strokes on, hence the title.
It's been a strange week,  exams and revision have eaten into my life and  don't seem to have taken their fill yet. There have been highs and lows, smashing the granny out of the MatLab exam was definitely a high, and failing  at a chest session in the gym springs to mind as a low...
Got asked to define success the other day. It's a strange question that I'm sure you could get hundreds of different answers about. It totally depends  how you define success. The on-line dictionary seems to have all the bases covered:

1.
the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts orendeavors.
2.
the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3.
a successful performance or achievement: The play was aninstant success.
4.
a person or thing that is successful: She was a greatsuccess on the talk show.

The second definition is what most people would have thought when it comes to success. But if you are talking about a successful life, then I would rephrase the question to say " Are you happy with what you have achieved in your life?"

To me its not money, or fame. They would enrich your life, but I would hope they would not define it. The famous people that I admire are people who have worked hard and are talented at what they push for. People like Lance Armstrong. His immense personal struggles and the achievements that he has worked for with the help of his friends and family are a huge inspirational story to anyone.
You can say what you like about Eminem too, but he is amazing. One of, if not the best rapper alive.

To be honest, I would be happy if I got my degree and started working in the industry within the next 4 years.
That would show me that I can achieve what I set my mind too, and that hard work can pay off.

But to do that, I have to cut this blog here, and get back to revision.
One love

Procrastination (The Christmas Holidays).

Well, I guess I should write something here. I'm not quite sure why I am doing this, it's not going to amount to anything, or influence anyone. Revision is causing my brain to clog up with strange things, so I have decided to write these small blogs (if you could even class them as that).

It seems that many people that write blogs have something in mind when they begin, or are under the impression that their time is better served complaining about things in blog posts that going out and actively contributing to society.

I would like to think that mine with be neither of the above, as they will just be discussing current events in my highly uneventful life, and will just be a way to pass the time around Uni work.

I got back to Bath a few days ago to crack on with revision for the first semester exams. I don't understand peoples obsession with Christmas. For me its just about getting everyone together and eating vast amounts of food. I was gonna have a rant about people spending far to much on presents, but to those of you that know me, it would seem ironic as I spend far to much money on clothing.

I don't know if its just for me, but the main question I get asked when I go home by friends and family is "What are you going to do with/after your degree?" But to me it seems like one of the simplest questions to answer..."Get a job." Hopefully something to do with what I will have spent four years of my life studying.

I had so many things I wanted to do, and people I wanted to see this Christmas holiday, but the weather had other plans. To be honest, this was probably for the best, meant that I got my head down and did some work. But on the flip side, when I did go out and about, I met new people. Always an interesting experience for me, seeing how people change around others and why that is.

Anyway, I better get back to Differentiation Applications...
If there are no more blogs, I have rammed a biro into my eye.
